CPT Paul C. Sawtelle, Infantry. 16 April 1971. Commissioned into the Infantry from USMA in 1969, Paul’s first assignment was to the 82nd Airborne Division as a platoon leader. Volunteering for Vietnam, his superb performance as a rifle platoon leader in and Infantry Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division saw him assigned to the Division’s Ranger company in early 1971.
While leading a Ranger team from L Co, 75th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division in the Ashau Valley, Paul sprung an ambush on an advancing North Vietnamese patrol. He was mortally wounded in the ensuing firefight. Posthumously promoted to Captain, Paul was awarded the Bronze Star Medal w//V device and Purple Heart.
