The Captain David O. Byars Memorial Scholarship

Captain David O. Byars graduated from the US Military Academy in 1969 and was commissioned as an Armor officer. He was a third generation West Pointer, as both his father and grandfather were USMA graduates, in the classes of 1938 and 1910 respectively. Following a short assignment with the 1st Cavalry Division, Captain Byars deployed to Vietnam with the Americal Division and distinguished himself in combat. He was severely wounded and evacuated to Madigan Army Hospital at Fort Lewis, WA, where his father was the Commanding General of the post.

 

As a result of his wounds, he was medically retired from the Army and moved to Pocatello, ID where he became a successful businessman. He passed away on December 13, 2018, in Boise, Idaho. His military awards include the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation for Valor, and Army Commendation Medal.
