Master Sergeant Leroy A. Petry was born in Santa Fe, NM, and joined the US Army upon graduation from high school. As a member of the 2nd Battalion, 75th Army Ranger Battalion, he was stationed at Ft Lewis, WA, and from there he deployed multiple times to Iraq and to Afghanistan. On his seventh deployment in 2008 to Afghanistan, he was participating as the senior noncommissioned officer leading an action in the Patika Province to capture a high value Taliban target, when the team came under heavy Taliban fire. He and several of his soldiers were wounded, but then an enemy grenade was thrown into the area where they were engaged. Without regard to his own safety, MSG Petry grabbed and threw the grenade back towards the enemy. It detonated upon release, amputating his right hand, but saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded to MSG Petry the Medal of Honor by for his gallantry and courageous actions. Upon recovery from his wounds, MSG Petry continued to serve until his military retirement in 2014.
