Dallas: The Board of Directors of the Army Scholarship Foundation announced today that the family of Captain Frank G. Oliver has joined with friends together with the Army Scholarship Foundation to establish the Captain Frank G. Oliver Memorial Scholarship in his honor. This effort was led by his wife Laura Oliver and his US Military Academy Classmates. The Captain Frank G. Oliver Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in his memory annually to a deserving Army dependent or spouse attending college.

Frank “Chip” Oliver was born and raised in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, to Frank and Wanda Oliver. His accomplishments were many. Whether it was church activities, academics, swimming, or band, Chip was always contributing, giving his time, talent, and love. After graduating from high school in New Kensington, Chip proudly joined the West Point Class of 1969 on 1 July 1965. As a cadet, Chip always found time to help his classmates, particularly in Spanish, and he also sang in the Cadet Glee Club.

Upon graduation from the US Military Academy in 1969, Chip was commissioned in the Infantry.  His initial tour was with the 3d Armored Division in Gelnhausen, Germany, first as a platoon leader and subsequently as a company executive officer and then brigade S-3, Air, where he fell in love with flying.  Captain Oliver applied for and was accepted to attend flight school and spent a year learning to fly Huey and Cobra helicopters. In May 1972, he joined the 60th Aviation Assault Helicopter Company of the 1st Aviation Brigade in Vietnam. He flew medivac helicopters, and in September 1972 was lost while on a mission to rescue wounded American soldiers near Dalat. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, 5 Air Medals, and the Purple Heart. He was the last West Point graduate to fall in Vietnam.
