The Army Scholarship Foundation announced today the award of ten scholarships to children of United States Army soldiers and veterans and to spouses of active duty enlisted soldiers. Scholarships for the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year were awarded to deserving Army family members as follows:

The Captain Jennifer Schafer Odom Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Mr Joseph Capparelli, Jr. of Williamstown, NY. Joseph is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Capparelli of Williamstown. Mr. Capparelli served as a Specialist during Desert Shield/Storm. Joseph is a sophomore majoring in Business Management at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY.

Jennifer Shafer Odom grew up on a dairy farm in Knoxville, Maryland. After graduating first in her class at Brunswick High School, she entered the U.S. Military Academy and graduated as a member of the Class of 1992. She became an Army aviator and served tours of duty in both the United States and Europe, where she supported both the Kurdish refugee and Bosnia missions. While serving with the 204th Military Intelligence Battalion at Fort Bliss, Texas in 1999, her aircraft was reported missing while flying intelligence and counter drug missions over Columbia, South America. She and her crew were lost.

The Lieutenant Scott Love Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Mr. Trent Brock of Fort Campbell, KY. Trent is the son of Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan Brock who is assigned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell. Trent is majoring in broadcasting and performance arts.

The Sergeant Andrew Topham Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Jordan McNab of Hartford, IL. Jordan is the daughter of SFC and Mrs. Shawn McNab. SFC McNab retired from active duty with the New York Army National Guard with a service connected disability following combat in Desert Storm and subsequently passed away. Jordan will enter the University of Missouri in Columbia and will major in Nursing.

Jordan will enter the University of Missouri in Columbia and will major in Nursing.

The Lieutenant General Jack Costello Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ms. Victoria Inman of Vilseck, Germany. She is the daughter of Command Sergeant Major and Mrs Jeremiah Inman. CSM Inman is assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck. He is a veteran of numerous combat deployments to the Middle East. Victoria is a sophomore at Furman University in Greenville, SC and is majoring in International Relations.

LTG Jack Costello was born in Pottsville, PA and was commissioned in the Army upon graduation from the Citadel. He served in the 82d Airborne Division and in Vietnam. He commanded the 2d Battalion, 59th Air Defense Artillery, the 35th ADA Brigade, the 32d Army Air Defense Command in Germany, the ADA School and Fort Bliss, Texas, and the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command. Upon retirement, he joined the Raytheon Company where he led Network Centric Systems Strategic Planning and Business Development operations and the company’s Improvised Explosive Device Defeat efforts.

The Brigadier General Anson Schulz Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Mrs. Melissa Contreras of Fort Polk, LA. Melissa is the wife of Sergeant Gerardo Contreras, who is assigned to 5th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery, and recently returned from a deployment in Afghanistan with Task Force Patriot of the 10th Mountain Division. Melissa is a junior at Colorado State University majoring in Business Management.

Brigadier Anson General Schulz enlisted in the Army from Indiana and served for two years before being commissioned through Officer Candidate School. He deployed with the 8th Missile Battalion to Homestead AFB, FL during the Cuban Missile Crisis and subsequently served in Vietnam. During his career he was awarded the Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit. Following his retirement as the Chief of Staff of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization, he enjoyed a distinguished civilian business career with Northrop-Grumman, Quantum Research, and RAM Incorporated.

The Lieutenant Keirn C. Brown Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Mrs. Megan Wade from Danielson, Connecticut. She is the spouse of Specialist Matthew Wade who is assigned to the 2d Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2d Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Megan is a senior at Boston University where she is majoring in Political Science and Ancient Greek and Latin.

The Doctor Emory Ladanyi Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Mr. Brandon Pettitt of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Brandon’s father is a captain (chaplain) assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson. Brandon is a junior at the University of Colorado where he is majoring in communications art and human resources.

Doctor Emory Ladanyi served in the Army Medical Corps in World War II in the Sicily and Italy Campaign. Following the war, he continued his medical career as a dermatologist. He also devoted his energies to the fine arts, becoming a world renowned artist and producing over 3000 pieces of art, including oils, acrylics, water colors, pastels, charcoals, inks, and woodcuts in a variety of styles including expressionist, portraits, abstracts, and both land- and cityscapes.

The KBR Honorary Scholarship is awarded to Mr. Phillip Angelo Bruan of Seattle, Washington. Phillip has been raised by a single mother, Ms. Yvonne Fernandez, who served in the Army as a specialist from 1977 to 1981. Phillip is a senior at Seattle University where he is majoring in Political Science.

The Hamilton Sundstrand Honorary Scholarship was awarded to Ms. Zidisha Dambuza of Grovetown, Georgia. Her father is a single parent and widower who retired from the Army as a First Sergeant in 2005. Zidisha is a junior at the University of Georgia studying Sociology and Fashion Merchandising.

The BAE Systems Honorary Scholarship was is being awarded to Mr. Taylor Curry of Vicenza, Italy. Taylor’s father, Master Sergeant Michael S. Curry, Jr. was killed in action on 23 July 2007 while serving in combat in Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 503d Infantry of the 173d Airborne Brigade. Taylor remained in Vicenza with his mother and brother while attending and graduating from Vicenza High School. Taylor will enter Columbia University in New York City this fall.

BAE Systems is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. The company provides support and service solutions for current and future defense, intelligence, and civilian systems, and designs, develops and manufactures a wide range of electronic systems and subsystems for both military and commercial applications. They also design, develop, produce, and provide service support of armored combat vehicles, artillery systems and intelligent munitions.

The Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems Honorary Scholarship is awarded to Miss Jennifer Stawski of Junction City, Kansas. Jennifer’s father, Tom Stawski, retired from the Army as a staff sergeant following over twenty years’ service including combat operations in Desert Storm. Jennifer will attend Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan, Kansas where she will major in Youth Ministry.

The Allied Associates International Honorary Scholarship was awarded to Mrs. Stojanka Berry of Killeen, Texas. Stojanka is the spouse of Sergeant Nabeh Mark Berry who is on active duty with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas. Stojanka is a junior at the Texas A&M, Central Texas University Campus, majoring in Social Work.
